As promised, Nintendo recently released a free YouTube application for its 3DS console lineup.
The news was first reported by YouTube user HashtagIdiotic, who posted the news to Reddit on Friday. The app is available for download in the 3DS eShop in North America and Europe.
Any user with Internet access can now easily swap between Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D and the latest cat-plays-piano viral video at home or on the go. The dual-screen experience allows you to play an uninterrupted video while scrolling through content on the top display, using the buttons and pads to navigate. Tapping the screen with a stylus also works.
The biggest drawback, ironically, is that the Nintendo 3DS lacks support for 3D playback. There is no word on whether that option will eventually be integrated into the consoles.
Nintendo also boosted the current YouTube app on the Wii U, making improvements to the interface that allow viewing on the GamePad, as well as the ability to search on the handheld device while watching a video on a connected TV.
YouTube is the latest addition to the 3DS family, following the October launch of Hulu Plus, available now on the 3DS, 3DS XL, and the recently released 2DS.
Meanwhile, Mario Brothers fans can take advantage of Nintendo's Cyber Monday deal — a limited-edition silver 3DS XL console, featuring an image of on-the-run Mario and Luigi. Packaged at $199.99, the system also comes pre-installed with the Mario & Luigi: Dream Team game, the fourth in the plumbers' role-playing series. This title sends players into Luigi's dreams to help save Pi'illlo Island.
Other bundles include a blue 3DS system with Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon for $169.99, plus a gold-and-black Nintendo 3DS XL system with a download code for a digital version of The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, priced at $219.99.
