LG purchased webOS, or at least what was left of webOS, about a year ago. They have been pretty quiet about what they’ve been doing with the operating system, other than to mention that they would be using it for their smart TVs. At CES next month, LG is finally going to be unveiling their new smart TV line that runs webOS.LG researcher Hong Sung-pyo gave a statement reported by ZDNet Korea, at a semiconductor event in South Korea, that LG’s new webOS TV would be dropping next month. The TV will have a dual-core 2.2 GHz processor and 1.5 GB of RAM. That should allow it to handle multi-tasking features and leave some apps running in the background. WebOS was well-known for its enhanced multi-tasking abilities. Both Android and iOS have borrowed and built on these multi-tasking features since webOS’ demise.The OS could look nothing like the old smartphone and tablet platform that we saw on devices three years ago. LG has been working to revamp the interface and says that it will be something new, “a gamechanger.” We might see some design elements from the old webOS platform, but LG wants to make this their own. LG is also going to resurrect Palm and HP’s Enyo development platform and push third-party developers to build apps using the open-source Javascript framework.LG is hoping that this revamped and revitalized smart TV OS will bring consumers a better experience. They want to replace external media players like Chromecast and Roku with their own software. This is a smart move because the consumer market tends to want to avoid having to plug in extra devices to their home entertainment setup. Simple is better when it comes to the mass market. LG bought webOS almost a year ago, after HP purchased Palm and then let the webOS platform essentially die out. LG purchased the webOS source code and employees in the deal with HP and licensed the Palm patents that pertained to webOS.CES 2014 kicks off in just a few weeks in Las Vegas, Nevada.
